The Institute (Instituto) opened their doors in La Labor, a small village 15 miles from Guatemala City in 1989. The school was established as a cooperative junior high - high school with a school term January through October. The goal has been and continues to improve and expand the youth educational opportunities. It was in 1989 that Sister Kris Schrader, ASC was invited to teach English to the first year students. The following year, she assumed full time responsibility for the Education Center. The Instituto received financial support from the US Region of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ to buy land and began construction of a permanent site for the school. The students' contribution was clearing lots and carrying building materials and excitement grew in the community. The new school replaced the classrooms which had functioned in the town hall room and an outside hallway. With construction underway, the Institute was operating with 3 grade level classrooms. In Guatemala this level of education after primary school is called Basicos.
In 1991, the Instituto adopted a new name honoring Saint Maria De Mattias, foundress of the religious community Sister Adorers of the Blood of Christ. This congregation continues to be a substantial contributor to the education project through small grants and the significant contribution of allowing Sister Kris to work for a minimum salary.
Over the years from 1991 through today, the development of additional classrooms, computer lab, carpentry lab, library and a basketball court have enhanced the campus. Programs have been created to involve parents and other village supporters.
The Instituto Maria De Mattias holds its head up high for the achievements and honor of contributing to the formation of the youth of this poor sector of Guatemala.
